Anna Schierbeek contact information

She is an emerging professional artist from Holland, Michigan in the United States. She received her BFA in Drawing from Kendall College of Art and Design in 2015, with an MFA in drawing to follow this year of 2020. She received the Golden Apple Residency scholarship in 2018 where she completed her residency in Harrington, Maine.


She works in a variety of mixed media including oil paints to charcoal and graphite. Exploring different artistic processes to communicate through artwork, Anna lives and works out of her studio in Holland, Michigan.

“The process of being a person is very complex, beautiful, frightening, confusing, fascinating, and the way that I approach trying to make sense of it all is through artwork.”


“As a person who struggles with mental obstacles such as depression and anxiety, creating artwork is a way for me to not only make sense of things, but to heal mental wounds as well.”


She believes that artwork is able to serve as another language and help us verbalize what we want to express.

“By taking my internal dialogue and transforming it into something tangible and beautiful, the artwork serves as a reflection not of what we should fear, but what we should embrace as a part of the process of being human.” She says that her art comes from the most honest parts of her being.


“There is no separation from my life and my work; the work stems from what I am going through at that time. I believe the most honest parts of ourselves, the most vulnerable, are what make us who we are. Artwork can serve as a reflection of that and provide for deeper connections.”

This series of work is titled, “The Translation Process”. I have always been fascinated with being human. It never fails to amaze me how complex, beautiful, and horrifying this process of living is.


What happens in our minds affects our external behaviours. The problem is that no one can see that. My work is about giving a voice to our private worlds by translating the internal process of being human into artwork.


By this process of translating something felt into something that can be seen, I am able to regain control of my internal compositions.


Our minds are so powerful, but we are able to take back the direction of our thoughts through our ability to make sense of things. Struggling with mental obstacles my entire life, I found a way to heal.

I realised that when we are able to learn about the source of a behaviour or thought, we have the power to change it. As I learn by conversations with others or reading about human behaviour, I am able to make connections mentally and translate them physically through marks and lines in my work. It is a process of learning, understanding, and healing.


All of the pieces in this set are done on mylar paper. I use this specific paper because of its ability to hold almost any material I throw at it. I have a love of both wet and dry materials and with the spontaneity of the work, I often do not know which materials I will use throughout the process. Mylar looks like a delicate material, but it can really take a beating. I use a variety of materials from graphite, colored pencil, and charcoals, to rags, oils, oil bars, pastels, palette knives and solvents. Some of the pieces are first prepped with gesso to achieve texture and I will add/subtract marks and lines as I explore what I want the piece to say.

“During my last semester as a grad student, I did an experiment where I went a week without words. I did not speak, write, or text. My form of communication was mark-making. I wanted to see how much others could understand me through drawing marks, and I also wanted to dedicate time to intensely observe human behavior. By taking away my verbal language, I was able to explore how we connect to one another without words. The experiment was very successful and extremely eye opening. I created over a hundred small abstract drawings through the process and the experiment changed my artistic process as well to a more calming atmosphere.”


“My dream project would be to continue this process in different parts of the world to observe how humans interact in other areas and make artwork about it through the journey. My passions are people and art. We all have so much to learn from one another and I use my work as a way to contribute to those conversations.”
